Paxos vs Antipaxos: What's the Difference?
If you're deciding between Paxos and Antipaxos, the main difference is simple: Paxos is about villages, walking, and dining, while Antipaxos is about beaches, swimming, and striking sea colours. Most travellers don't actually have to choose — the standard day cruise from Corfu visits both — but understanding what each island is for helps you plan your free time and set realistic expectations for the day.
This guide covers what each island is known for, how they differ in practice, and how to make the most of a single-day visit that takes in both.
Geography in one paragraph
Paxos and Antipaxos are two small Ionian islands roughly 13 km south of Corfu and just 2 km apart from each other. Paxos is the larger of the two — about 25 sq km, populated, with several villages and an inhabited harbour town (Gaios). Antipaxos is tiny, largely uninhabited, and reached only by boat. Both are part of the same regional cluster, which is why Corfu day cruises typically combine them into one route.
What Paxos is known for
Paxos is the cultural side of the trip. The island is covered in centuries-old olive groves, has a slow rhythm of life, and is dotted with traditional villages where the architecture has barely changed in decades. Most day-cruise stops centre on Gaios, the harbour capital, but the island is also home to Lakka and Loggos — two smaller villages with their own character.
- Gaios and other traditional island villages
- Harbour views, Venetian-era architecture, and local tavernas
- The nearby Blue Caves on the western coast
- A more cultural and exploratory stop — best for walking, eating, and watching island life happen
For deeper context on the island itself — beyond the cruise stop — see our Paxos island guide.

What Antipaxos is known for
Antipaxos is the swimming side of the trip. The island has almost no infrastructure — a handful of seasonal tavernas at most — but it is famous across the Mediterranean for the colour and clarity of the water at Voutoumi and Vrika beaches. Both are commonly compared to the Caribbean for the turquoise of the shallow water and the brilliant whiteness of the sand.
- Famous beaches — Voutoumi and Vrika are the headline names
- Swimming and snorkelling in calm, shallow, exceptionally clear water
- A nature-focused stop rather than a village visit — there's no town to explore
- Reachable only by boat, which is part of why it stays unspoiled

Can you see both in one day?
Yes — and for most visitors that's the best approach. Our Paxos – Antipaxos – Blue Caves cruise is designed to let you experience both sides of the trip in one route. The itinerary spends the morning along the Paxos coastline (including the Blue Caves), anchors at Antipaxos for a 45-minute swim, and then docks in Gaios for 2–3 hours of free time. By the time you get back to Corfu in the evening, you've covered the photogenic part of Paxos, swum at Antipaxos, and had a proper lunch in a Greek harbour.
Best time of year to visit
Cruises run from April through October. The water at Antipaxos is warmest in July and August, with the most dependable sea conditions. May, June, and September are quieter, slightly cooler in the water, and easier on the wallet for accommodation in Corfu. October is the fringe of the season — still possible, but with more weather variability.
What to bring for the day
- Swimwear, towel, and a change of clothes for after the swim stop
- Reef-safe sunscreen — the swim is in shallow, clear water
- Sunglasses and a hat — there's no shade at the swim stop
- Comfortable shoes for the cobbled streets of Gaios
- Cash and a card for a taverna lunch in Gaios
- A light jacket for the evening return — the open sea is cooler than the harbour
Which side will you remember?
It depends on what you came for. People who like a quiet harbour, a long lunch at a taverna, and a walk through narrow village streets will find Paxos the more memorable half of the day. People who came for the colour of the water, a swim, and unspoiled beaches will pick Antipaxos every time. The honest answer is that the combination is what makes the trip work — neither side is as good on its own as both are together.
Frequently asked questions
Is Antipaxos better than Paxos?
Not better, just different. Antipaxos is stronger for beaches and swimming; Paxos is stronger for village atmosphere, food, and architecture. Most day-cruise itineraries include both for that reason.
How far apart are the islands?
About 2 km. They are close enough that both are routinely combined into the same day-trip itinerary, including the Finikas Cruises route.
Can you stay on Antipaxos?
There are very limited accommodation options on Antipaxos. Most travellers experience the island as a day stop rather than an overnight stay. Paxos has more accommodation if you want to stay in the area.
Are there restaurants on Antipaxos?
Yes, but very few — only a handful of seasonal tavernas. Bring water and snacks if you're particular about timing. Gaios on Paxos has a far wider choice of restaurants.
Is the water actually that clear?
Yes. The shallow bays of Antipaxos are routinely cited as some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. Photos do not exaggerate the colour, though they sometimes flatten how shallow it really is.
