Paxos – Antipaxos – Blue Caves: What to Expect on This Day Cruise
The Paxos – Antipaxos – Blue Caves cruise is the most popular day trip from Corfu because it stacks three completely different experiences into a single day: sea caves carved into limestone cliffs, a swim stop in some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean, and a couple of relaxed hours in a Venetian-era harbor village. This guide walks through what actually happens hour by hour, what's included, and the practical details most travelers ask about before booking.

Hour-by-hour: what actually happens
08:00 — Meet at the port (New Port, Corfu). Check-in at the dock with your booking reference. The crew shows you the boat layout: shaded outdoor seating up top, air-conditioned lounges below, and a snack bar in between. Pick your spot — most regulars head up top for the morning departure.
08:30 — Departure southward. The boat clears the harbor and turns south along Corfu's eastern coast. The first 90 minutes are scenic sailing — you'll see the south Corfu coastline, then the open Ionian Sea, and finally the silhouette of Paxos rising ahead.
10:00 — Paxos west coast and the Blue Caves. The boat slows along Paxos's western cliffs. You pass through Ortholithos arch and approach the main cave entrances. The water shifts from deep blue to brilliant turquoise depending on the cave depth and the angle of the sun. Bring your camera up top for this stretch.
11:00 — Antipaxos swim stop. The boat anchors off Vrika or Voutoumi beach, depending on the day's swell. The captain lowers a swimming ladder. You have about an hour to swim, snorkel, or stay aboard. Water temperature in peak summer is around 24-26°C.

Meet at the port by 08:00 AM (30 minutes before departure).
12:00 — Onward to Gaios. A short sail brings you into the Gaios channel — the narrow passage between the islets that gives the harbor its postcard view. The boat docks at the central waterfront.
12:30-14:30 — Free time in Gaios. Two hours to walk the village, eat lunch, browse the harbor shops, or sit at a cafe. Most passengers head to one of the harbor-side tavernas for fresh fish or Paxiot specialties like bourdeto.
14:30 — Boarding for return. Departure is on a fixed schedule; the crew will sound a horn ten minutes before. Don't be the person they wait for.
14:30-18:30 — Return to Corfu. The route back hugs the coast in late-afternoon light. Many passengers nap, snack, or share photos on the upper deck. Arrival back at New Port is typically around 6:30 PM.
What's included — and what isn't
Included: the round-trip cruise, sightseeing pass through the Blue Caves, the Antipaxos swim stop with ladder, and free time in Gaios. The snack bar onboard is open all day.
Not included: food and drinks (snack bar is pay-as-you-go), lunch in Gaios (typical taverna meal: €12-20 per person), and personal items like snorkel masks or towels.
What to bring
- Swimsuit and towel — the Antipaxos swim stop is the highlight for most passengers
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+) — the upper deck has limited shade and the sea reflects strongly
- A light layer — mornings and the return leg can be breezy even in July
- Cash in Euros — for the snack bar and Gaios tavernas; some smaller spots are card-skeptical
- Camera or phone with good charge — the Blue Caves segment alone is worth keeping the battery alive for
- Non-slip shoes — Gaios cobbles are uneven and the boat deck can be wet
- Optional: snorkel mask — the Antipaxos water has excellent visibility for snorkeling
Who this cruise is best for
This cruise is ideal for travelers who want to see the highlights of the southern Ionian in a single day without planning their own transport, ferries, or accommodation. It works well for couples, families with children (the boat is stable and the swim stop is supervised), solo travelers, and anyone short on time. It's less suited to people who prefer independent exploration or want significantly more swimming time — in that case, a private boat charter would be the alternative.
If you're also considering the Albania day trip, read our side-by-side comparison. Many guests do both during a week-long stay.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cruise suitable for children?
Yes. The vessel is stable and has shaded indoor areas. Younger children should wear a life vest at the swim stop — we have a limited number on board, but bringing your own is recommended for ages under 6.
What if the weather is bad?
The cruise runs in normal sea conditions. If the captain judges the Ionian too rough (rare in summer), the trip is rescheduled or refunded. Light overcast does not cancel — the Blue Caves still look striking in diffuse light.
How long is the swim stop, really?
Approximately 1 hour at anchor. Plan to swim for about 40 minutes if you also want time to dry off and reboard without rush.
Is lunch served on board?
No full meals — the snack bar offers sandwiches, snacks, coffee, soft drinks, and beer. Most passengers eat lunch ashore in Gaios during the free time stop.
Can I get seasick?
The Ionian is generally calm in summer. If you're prone to motion sickness, take preventive medication 30 minutes before boarding and stay on the upper deck where the horizon is visible.
Do I need to book in advance?
In July and August, yes — the cruise frequently sells out 2-3 days ahead. In May, June, September, and October you can typically book 24 hours in advance.
